The Company will source dried split ginger, which will undergo intense processing to obtain the desired packaged product for exports. The packaged dried split ginger will be:

  • Clean and practically free of any visible foreign matter;
  • Practically free of damage caused by pests affecting the general appearance of the produce;
  • Free of any foreign smell and/or taste;
  • Free of abrasions; and
  • Free of abnormal external moisture, and properly dried.

Ginger is one of the most widely used food seasonings in modern diets; Nigeria has one of the best-flavored varieties globally. It is actually part of the plant family that includes turmeric cardamom that has huge health benefits. The global market for ginger is valued at over 3 billion USD, creating large opportunities for ginger exporters in Nigeria. Ginger can be processed into a wide variety of products. Many products can be manufactured from ginger like dehydrated ginger, ginger candy, ginger powder, ginger oil and oleoresins and so on. Ginger is an important commercial crop with versatile applications. As condiment, ginger is used for flavoring many food products like tomato sauce or ketchup, salad dressings, meat sausages, gravies, pickles, curry dishes and so on. The list of ginger uses is almost endless, being a pungent spicy herb and one of the more popular food spices. They range from baked products like gingerbread, ginger biscuits, and ginger cookies to drinks like ginger tea, ginger beer, ginger ale, etc. Ginger contains about two per cent essential oil.

 

The growing ginger market in Europe provides diverse opportunities. In 2018, the European direct imports of dried ginger from developing countries reached 127 thousand tons. Since 2014, the import volume has increased by 12% annually. In that same period, the (direct) import value increased by 2.6% annually, reaching €160 million in 2018. The Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Germany are together the top six most interesting markets for dried ginger in Europe. The Netherlands is the first position only because the country is an important European trade hub for spices, while the UK and Germany are simply the two largest markets in Europe for dried ginger.
