The Company will produce natural refined and well-packaged Honey for local and international trade. Natural honey is a sweet, viscous food substance made by bees. Bees produce honey from the sugary secretions of plants (floral nectar) or from secretions of other insects (such as honeydew), by regurgitation, enzymatic action, and water evaporation. Honey gets its sweetness from fructose and glucose. It has attractive chemical properties for baking and a distinctive flavor when used as a sweetener. Most microbes do not grow in honey, so sealed honey does not spoil, even after thousands of years.
The Company’s Honey will be naturally sourced from beehives around nice scenting plants, packaged under high safety conditions and will serve health, culinary and cosmetic purposes. The Honey will be packaged in 5-Litre PET containers for distribution.
Market Prospects
According to the USAID beekeeping pollination project, Nigeria can generate over $10 billion from local and international trade in honey and other hive products as domestic consumption currently stands at 380,000 metric tons. On the other hand, the global monetary value of trade in honey alone stands at about $4.5 million. Apart from the present high and still growing demand, bee products are highly priced globally, especially in non-producer countries. Nigeria farmers generally suffer a lot from deficiencies in production, storage, handling and packaging which makes their output unfit for the export market.
As more Nigerians increasingly become health conscious, so does the market for honey expands, and the income that accrue to honey farmers. Health and dieticians have identified some of the benefits of honey to include better cholesterol and improved immunity.
Apart from this, experts say honey purifies the environment by aiding the abundance of fruits, nuts and seeds through pollination, while also being a revenue spinner for the government through job creation.
